For example a helix is basically a twisting rotating electromagnetic wave.

So instead of the electric sine wave moving discretely in one xyz direction it is rotating as would the magnetic field.

The information in the wave may not be in the peak of the wave as in the example of AM radio; where the information is in the sidebands and the central amplitude defines the envelope and the information is held in the sidebands within the envelope.
