South Korea Goes on Media Blitz Defending Kim Jong-un’s Health

Reports out of South Korea continued to deny on Wednesday and Thursday local time that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un’s life is in danger. The rebuttals are designed to counter American media reports that Kim could be on his deathbed or even “brain dead.”

Reports of potentially severe health challenges facing Kim, believed to be about 36 years old, initially surfaced on the website Daily NK, which covers the repressive country. The publication, citing one unnamed source, claimed that Kim underwent heart surgery on April 12 and is recovering and at high risk for exposure to the Chinese coronavirus, which is deadly to many with preexisting medical conditions.

North Korea insists that it has documented zero cases of Chinese coronavirus in the country, despite being located in an area surrounded by nations with high numbers of cases. Some reports indicate that the virus has killed as many as 100 soldiers on the nation’s border with China.

On Monday, CNN reported that Kim could be in “grave danger,” though the quotes from anonymous officials the network published noted merely that intelligence officials were interested in monitoring Kim’s health. Kim is believed to be significantly obese, a factor that puts him at high risk of complicates from coronavirus, making his health important to track regardless of reports of any surgery.

Subsequent unsubstantiated American media chatter on Monday claimed he was “brain dead” or at least facing life-threatening health challenges. The reports were fueled in part by Kim’s bizarre absence from the public eye since April 11, the day before he allegedly had surgery. For the first time since ascending to the totalitarian throne of his father Kim Jong-il, the dictator missed the nation’s most important holiday this weekend, the birthday of his grandfather Kim Il-sung. Some suggested only a emergency could keep Kim from such an event.

On Thursday South Korea time, the nation’s JoongAng Ilbo newspaper published a story adding to the government denials of these reports titled “Kim Jong-un Is Perfectly Fine, Sources Say.”

An unnamed South Korean “government source” told the newspaper that Kim “is staying at a villa in Kangwon Province and has been conducting undisclosed visits to nearby locations” but Seoul has no information indicating that Kim’s death is imminent.

The nation’s Yonhap news agency published a story Wednesday similarly quoting an unnamed official at the presidential office insisting that, in North Korea, “there has been no unusual activity.”

Yonhap noted that the official “would not comment on Kim’s whereabouts and whether he underwent a heart surgery.”

Chosun Ilbo, a South Korean conservative newspaper, similarly quoted a “senior Cheong Wa Dae [presidential palace, the Blue House] official” insisting, “Kim is believed to be staying outside of Pyongyang with his close advisers and appears to be performing his duties as usual.”

UK Won’t Change Its Mind on Huawei’s 5G Involvement, Says Top Civil Servant

A top civil servant at the Foreign Office has said that the British government has made a “firm decision” on allowing Chinese tech giant Huawei to help build the United Kingdom’s 5G network, and the arrangement will not be reconsidered.

Asked whether he would advise Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Dominic Raab, to reevaluate the UK’s position, Sir Simon McDonald, the Foreign Office’s permanent undersecretary, told MPs at the foreign affairs select committee on Tuesday: “As you know… the government decided to proceed with an investment but with very strict conditions… As far as I know that… is a firm decision and is not being reopened.”

“China is a very important partner of the United Kingdom, and I think it’s compatible to proceed with the Huawei decision and have the strategically independent relationship that I have been talking about,” Sir Simon added in comments reported by Reuters.

In January, Prime Minister Boris Johnson signed off on the involvement of Huawei in the future development of the country’s 5G data networks. Despite the government saying that the Chinese company would be working on non-essential parts of the system — capping its involvement at 35 per cent — ministers and Anglosphere allies have warned that participation by the Chinese company could cause a security risk.

Huawei is widely held to be controlled by the communist Chinese state and reportedly used by Beijing for spying. The United States has warned that Huawei has “back door” access inbuilt into its networks, causing concern that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) could use Huawei technology in the UK’s 5G network to secretly access sensitive and personal information.

Man at center of North Carolina District 9 election scandal indicted for social security fraud

McCrae Dowless, the man at the center of the District 9 election scandal, has been indicted on federal charges for collecting disability while being paid for working on campaigns in 2018.

According to court documents, Dowless worked for at least two candidates and their campaigns during the 2018 Midterm election. During that time, he reportedly got paid thousands of dollars for his work, yet failed to report his income to the Social Security Administration.

He was charged with one count of theft of government property, two counts of social security fraud and one count of false statements.

Dowless was known in his rural North Carolina community as a politically obsessed man who over nearly a decade delivered votes for his candidates and stayed just out of reach of laws protecting ballots from potential tampering.

Last year, he was indicted on several charges in connection with the District 9 election fraud investigation, including felony obstruction of justice, perjury and possession of absentee ballot.

He was arrested less than a week after the state elections board decided his work on behalf of Harris, starting with the 2018 primary, tainted the GOP candidate’s apparent victory in November.

A new election was ordered.

Channel 9′s thorough investigation into the District led to the only time in documented history a federal election was overturned for a fraud investigation.

Celebrate the Good: More Than 600,000 People Have Reportedly Recovered from Coronavirus

Much of the fear we face regarding COVID-19 has to do with just how little we really know about it, how invisible it is and how it forces people to play a horrible waiting game.

When cases first started popping up in the states, there weren’t enough tests available to really get a good idea of the scope of the spread, and even now many places won’t test potential patients who are only presenting mild symptoms.

China has updated its numbers, now stating that it has confirmed 83,853 cases of the coronavirus and experienced 4,636 deaths and 77,779 recoveries, according to data from Johns Hopkins.

There are still some staggering numbers being reported. Over 2.5 million cases have been confirmed worldwide, and the most have been reported by the United States at 820,104 on Tuesday afternoon.

That’s a terrifying number — but it’s out of over 4 million people who have been tested. And while over 14,500 have died in New York City alone, over 75,000 have recovered in the United States as a whole.

Worldwide, though there have been 176,323 deaths, there have been 679,748 recoveries so far — certainly an encouraging number, and hopefully it will be reflected in the patients still battling the virus.

Those who have been released with an all-clear from the hospitals are certainly celebrating. Nurses, doctors, family members and friends are all relieved when a patient gets to go home.

Take Baptist Health South Florida for example. On April 10, the hospital shared a video of a longtime married couple being wheeled out of the hospital together, both having beaten the virus.

Peter Nygard is facing allegations from 46 alleged victims that he abused them at alcohol and drug-fuelled 'pamper parties'.

The original lawsuit of 10 accusers was filed against the 78-year-old Canadian in February, when FBI raided his Manhattan office.

But the number of women has now swelled to 46, according to New York court papers which names his sprawling Bahamas mansion as the scene of many suspected sex attacks.

Prince Andrew, his then wife Sarah Ferguson and their two children Eugenie and Beatrice have been guests of Nygard at the exclusive Caribbean bolthole.

The embattled Duke of York quit royal duties last year following a car-crash television interview about his dead paedophile financier friend, Jeffrey Epstein.

Like Epstein, Nygard is accused of preying on 'young, impressionable, and often impoverished children and women', which he lured to his luxury properties on the promise of kick-starting their modeling careers.

One of the 46 women, an employee of the clothing tycoon from 2014, claimed 'he repeatedly raped her and forced her to defecate on him,' according to the lawsuit.

Another, Mary Jean Sassoon, who has waived her anonymity in an interview with the Miami Herald, recalled her terrifying encounter with Nygard.

The 67-year-old claimed that, after their children became firm friends in 1997, the fashion mogul invited her family to his compound on Lyford Cay, Bahamas, for New Year's Eve.

The mother, who was then in her 40s, said one night Nygard suddenly brought her to her knees and pushed her head down, ordering her to give him oral sex.

Sassoon told the newspaper she screamed and fled, but never told the authorities until recently upon seeing a news story about the original suit from the 10 women.

U.N. Secretary-General Says Climate Change Devastation Will Be 'Many Times Greater' Than Coronavirus Pandemic

The U.N. is looking to keep nations focused on efforts to fight the effects of climate change, with Secretary-General António Guterres urging governments to capitalize on their coronavirus pandemic rebuilding efforts by doing more to help the environment.

The U.N. leader spoke Monday during a virtual forum of small island states, where he said the devastation being caused by the virus should remind world leaders that such consequences will be far worse if they "retreat" on efforts to address climate change. In recent months, the U.N. conducted a survey of 40,000 people in 186 countries as part of an initiative marking the organization's 75th anniversary. The survey found that "climate" and "environment" topped the list of concerns that respondents believe will most affect humanity's future, followed by "conflicts" and "health risks."

Speaking just ahead of Earth Day on Wednesday, Guterres told the Alliance of Small Island States that the global community's "adaptation" and financial "resilience" in overcoming the pandemic should be continued in the fight against climate change.

"Currently, all eyes are on the COVID-19 pandemic, the biggest test the world has faced since the Second World War. We must work together to save lives, ease suffering, lessen the shattering economic and social consequences, and bring the disease under control," Guterres said. "But, at the same time, let us not lose focus on climate change. The social and economic devastation caused by climate disruption will be many times greater than the current pandemic."

Guterres stressed that he intends to rally international support for the Paris Agreement. The United States is set to officially withdraw from the climate accord one day after the November presidential election. President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal in June 2017, saying the agreement puts the U.S. at a "permanent disadvantage." Limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) and international strategies for reaching net zero emissions were among the elements of the international agreement.

A recent Pew Research Center survey found that the percentage of Americans who say global climate change is a major threat to the well-being of the U.S. has increased, from 44 percent in 2009 to 60 percent this year. Among Democrat-leaning voters, 88 percent say climate change is a major threat, compared with 31 percent of Republican-leaning voters who say the same.

Kentucky State Lawmaker Strangled Woman With Ethernet Cable Until She 'Believed She Was Going To Pass Out,' Police Say

Kentucky Republican Representative Robert Goforth was arrested Tuesday on domestic violence charges, including strangling a woman with an Ethernet cable and threatening to kill her.

Goforth, a former candidate for governor, was charged with assault, felony strangulation and terroristic threatening.

In 2019, Goforth was also accused of sexual misconduct by a woman who claimed in an online petition that Goforth had forced her to have sexual relations with a business associate. Goforth denied the allegations.

"As a husband and father," Goforth told the Commonwealth Journal in January 2019, "sexual assault and violence against women sickens me, and I condemn any such acts in the strongest possible terms."

When contacted for comment, the Laurel County Sheriff's Office directed Newsweek to a press release about Goforth's arrest on its Facebook page. According to that information, deputies responded to a complaint that a woman had shown up at the 911 Dispatch Center asking to speak to a deputy.

"When deputies arrived at 911 dispatch and made contact with the female, they noted that she had visible marks on her forehead, neck and arms," the Sheriff's Office said. "They learned that allegedly there had been an altercation and during the altercation the female victim had been strangled."

According to the arrest citation, Goforth strangled the woman "to the point that she had difficulty breathing and believed she was going to pass out." Goforth also attempted to "hog-tie" the victim.

"Deputies also noted there was bruising to the female victim's leg and that during the altercation the female victim stated that this subject stated he was going to kill her," the statement continued.

Three small children, who were allegedly present during the attack, were reported found safe in the accuser's home.

"It is deeply troubling to see an elected official who is part of our General Assembly being charged with such a serious, potentially fatal type of criminal activity," said the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence in a statement emailed to Newsweek on Tuesday. "We will be following closely the developments of this case as it progresses through the court system. Sadly, it is not altogether shocking to hear about a person who holds a position of such grave responsibility, and power, being charged with a crime of domestic violence."

"We are extremely grateful that the alleged female victim in this instance was able to access the help of law enforcement and that her injuries were not fatal," the statement continued.

In a Tuesday statement, Kentucky Democratic Spokeswoman Marisa McNee said Goforth "must resign immediately."

Greed and gluttony: Huge restaurant chains including Potbelly, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and Taco Cabana pocket $300MILLION in federal relief loans meant to help struggling small businesses

Companies with thousands of employees, past penalties from government investigations and risks of financial failure even before the coronavirus walloped the economy were among those receiving millions of dollars from a relief fund that Congress created to help small businesses through the crisis, according to a new analysis.

The Paycheck Protection Program was supposed to infuse small businesses with $349 billion in emergency loans that could help keep workers on the job and bills paid on time. But at least 75 companies that received the aid were publicly traded, the AP found, and some had market values well over $100 million.

The program was designed for companies with less than 500 employees, but restaurants and hotels were exempt from that limit if they had less than 500 employees per location.

Three New York men sue the WHO for 'incalculable' damages over its response to the coronavirus pandemic and accuse it of a cover up with China

Three New York men are suing the World Health Organization for 'incalculable' damages over its response to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a proposed class action, the residents of Westchester County accuse the WHO of a cover up with China and failing to quickly declare a pandemic.

The lawsuit by Richard Kling and Steve Rotker, both of New Rochelle, and Gennaro Purchia, of Scarsdale, was filed in the federal court in White Plains, New York.

It seeks unspecified damages for what they called WHO's 'incalculable' harm to the roughly 756,000 adult residents in Westchester County who would make up the class.

Westchester county was one of the earliest U.S. hot spots for the coronavirus and the men have accused the health body of gross negligence in covering up and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The three men also accuse the WHO of failing monitor China's response to the original outbreak, provide treatment guidelines, advise members on how to respond including through travel restrictions, and coordinate a global response.

They also accused the WHO of conspiring with China's government, which was not named as a defendant, to cover up COVID-19's severity.

'The Chinese government and the WHO intentionally misled the international community, including the named Plaintiffs, about the coronavirus and its devastating medical and economic effects', according to the lawsuit.

The WHO did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Its director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has defended the agency's handling of the pandemic, saying the WHO had kept the world informed about the coronavirus. He has also called for global unity to fight the pandemic.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly complained about its alleged mismanagement, cover-up and missteps.

He announced a decision to halt funding for the U.N. agency earlier this month; congress controls the funds.

Documents Reveal Feds Are Excited To Create A Mass Surveillance Network

A FOIA request by the Electronic Privacy Information Center revealed how excited the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI) is about using CCTV cameras to create a national surveillance network.

An NSCAI presentation titled "Chinese Tech Landscape Overview" discusses China's facial recognition CCTV camera network in glowing terms.

"When we talk about data resources, really the largest data source is the government.'"

The presentation discusses how the Chinese government profits from encouraging companies to use facial recognition on visitors and employees.

"Now that these companies are operating at scale they are building a host of other services (e.g. facial recognition for office buildings, augmented reality)"

In America things are not all that different.

In the United States, the Feds encourage private companies like Clearview AI, Amazon Ring and Flock Safety to use facial recognition and automatic license plate readers to identify everyone.

Under the section "State Datasets: Surveillance = Smart Cities" the presentation extol's China's smart city surveillance saying, "it turns out that having streets carpeted with cameras is good infrastructure for smart cities as well."

Americans do not need more government surveillance and we certainly do not need our smart cities carpeted with government surveillance devices.

The NSCAI says, "mass surveillance is a killer application for deep learning.

As our government applies AI deep learning to things like CCTV cameras, cellphone locations, and license plate readers, a person's entire life can be predicted.

AI's will use deep learning to accurately guess where you work, eat, shop, sleep, worship and vacation. Basically, mass surveillance is a killer application for knowing all there is to know about everyone.

Last week MLlive, revealed that a startup AI company co-founded by the University of Michigan is helping governments use CCTV cameras to monitor people for social distancing as indicated by a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Michigan (UM):

"Two weeks ago, Corso said he and his team began tracking physical distancing at locations like Times Square in New York, Miami Beach, Abbey Road in London and the Ruthven Museums Building at UM."

Police in New York City use CCTV cameras to fine people up to $1,000 for not social distancing. While police in Florida set up checkpoints on highways and police in the United Kingdom use CCTV cameras to enforce stay-at-home orders.

Voxel51 uses their "physical distancing index" to track social distancing in major cities around the globe.

"Voxel51 is tracking the impact of the coronavirus global pandemic on social behavior, using a metric we developed called the Voxel51 Physical Distancing Index (PDI). The PDI helps people understand how the coronavirus is changing human activity in real-time around the world. Using our cutting-edge computer vision models and live video streams from some of the most visited streets in the world, the PDI captures the average amount of human activity and social distancing behaviors in major cities over time."

What worries me is how law enforcement might use Voxel51 to fine or arrest people for not observing government-mandated social distancing.

Despite what Voxel51 claims about anonymizing identifiable data, they are still collecting their data from public/government cameras.

A 2019 article in the Michigan News University of Michigan revealed that Voxel51 uses artificial intelligence to identify and follow people and objects.

A Real New Deal & Debt Jubilee or a Green New Deal & Global Dictatorship?

As scary as it is for some to admit even at this stage of the game, the current financial system sits precariously on the edge of a meltdown beyond anything ever recorded in human history. Normally, such a systemic meltdown would generate such turbulence and panic that the masses of complacent subjects would be induced to action in defense of their families and nations, however under current circumstances, the coronavirus pandemic has ensured that no such mass movement, or policy fight has taken shape.

As I wrote in a February 27th editorial Why the Coming Economic Collapse Will NOT be Caused by Coronavirus, the inevitability of the meltdown has been well known to all leading central bankers and highly placed officials in “a position to know” for a very long time. This fact was known even before the new wave of emergency bailouts were begun in September 2019 starting with $50 billion/night of overnight repo loans. It was known even before the age of bailout was created to postpone the 2008-09 collapse of the system under threat of Martial Law. It was known before Glass-Steagall was repealed in 1999 and over-the-counter derivatives were deregulated in 2001. Let’s just say it’s been a part of a very ugly plan for a very long time.

But make no mistake, you didn’t have to be a “highly placed” banker or technocratic social engineer to know this collapse was going to happen. No crystal ball was ever needed.

All a thinking person had to do was assess the observable underpinnings of the post-1971 financial order and look with unbiased eyes upon the consistent rate of collapse of the PHYSICAL economic platform that supports life while taking note of the paradoxical hyperbolic increase of monetary assets, and speculative claims in the system every year since the age of “deregulation” was ushered in (and the post WWII paradigm of industrial growth economics was thrown in the trash). Outsourcing of vital manufacturing, decay of infrastructure maintenance and improvement, privatization of public goods, and loss of machine tool powers simply resulted in the transfer of wealth into the hands of a small elite, and the stripping of nation states from the economic sovereignty they once enjoyed.

Where monetary growth used to be tied to the measurable growth of physical economic variables mentioned above, the post-1971 world order demanded that money could only grow according to debts that were ever more disassociated from reality. Instead of justifying the growth of infrastructure, and improvements in the productive powers of labor, debts became tied to mere speculative activities setting in place a time bomb in the form of a new bubble economy. Praising government-to-be, Pompeo says West Bank annexation is up to Israel

Secretary of state says Washington will share views on matter privately, asserts US would be happy to provide more aid to Palestinians, but is concerned it’s not reaching them

Lauding Israel’s newly formed unity government, which is slated to begin advancing measures to annex large parts of the West Bank in July, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that the matter is not something for Washington to interfere with.

“The Israelis will ultimately make those decisions. That’s an Israeli decision, but we’ll work closely with them to share our views of this in a private setting,” he said during a press conference.

On the formation of the government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Blue and White chief Benny Gantz, Pompeo added, “a fourth election we think wouldn’t have been in their best interest, but we’ll leave that to them. We think it’s not in the world’s best interest. We’re glad there’s now a fully formed government.”

Key to Afghan Peace, Prisoner Releases Threatened by Coronavirus

Growing concerns prisoners will die in custody before long-delayed exchange

The biggest stumbling block in the US-Taliban peace deal in Afghanistan is prisoner releases, with the Ghani government still months behind on planned releases. Officials are concerned that the coronavirus could compound this delay into a much bigger problem.

Being piled into prisons isn’t ideal for health, and during a pandemic, that’s potentially disastrous. This is a big reason why around the world, nations are trying to limit their prison populations, releasing who they can rather than risking killing them.

That’s not happening in Afghanistan, and as they trickle out small numbers of Taliban, the real danger is that some of the people the Taliban were assured would be released will die in prison, months after the deal they reached should’ve secured their release.

While Ghani has suggested he needs more time to screen prisoners, if Taliban figures start dying this stops being a delay and starts being a flagrant violation of the peace deal. Delays are only temporary until they can’t be undone.

Hoax Flyers for Anti-Coronavirus Lockdown Protest Draws Attention From Cops, Media and Trump Haters; But Trump Supporters Not Fooled

Hoax flyers promoting a protest against the COVID-19 Chinese coronavirus lockdowns went up last week in the town of Tottenville in Staten Island, New York City. The flyers mockingly called for “non-essential workers” to attend even if they were sick and to not wear masks. The flyers also employed pro-Trump slogans #MAGA and Keep America Great. Police, the media and Trump haters fell for the obvious hoax, but Trump supporters did not as no one showed up to protest at the announced time of 11 a.m. last Sunday.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — According to fliers posted around Tottenville, some non-essential workers planned an “End the Lockdown Rally” for Sunday at Conference House Park, in hopes of protesting the current “New York on PAUSE” mandates under Gov. Andrew Cuomo in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

But no one showed up for Sunday’s rally — except the police.

Fliers promoting an “End the Lockdown Rally” were spotted at the CVS on Page Avenue, and on the corner of Main Street and Amboy Road.

The promotional material said the rally would take place Sunday morning at 11 a.m. on the Conference House lawn in Tottenville.

“No mask needed. Bring your children. Non-essential workers. If you’re sick still come, it’s your right!” stated the fliers.

…It’s no secret that New York City has been hit especially hard by the coronavirus pandemic. According to researchers at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, more than 14,450 people have died from COVID-19 in New York City — and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been emphasizing that its hospitals are absolutely overwhelmed. Nonetheless, the extremists who announced the would-be event circulated a flyer promoting an “End the Lockdown Rally” and declaring “Liberate Staten Island.”

It gets worse: the flyer urged Staten Island residents to “bring your children,” noted that “no mask” was needed and asserted, “If you’re sick, still come — it’s your right.”

But in a city where more than 14,450 people have died from COVID-19, it seems most people have enough common sense to realize that Cuomo isn’t shutting down NYC and other parts of his state because he wants to inconvenience people. McConnell says states should be able to declare bankruptcy, wants to hit 'pause' on federal aid

With the coronavirus crisis hitting state budgets hard, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Wednesday that he is open to allowing states to declare bankruptcy – rather than sending governors more federal money to deal with their own ballooning deficits.

McConnell made the comments on "The Hugh Hewitt Show" against the backdrop of governors imploring the federal government for urgent fiscal help and congressional Democrats seeking to work with the Trump administration to provide it. McConnell, instead, said he "would certainly be in favor of allowing states to use the bankruptcy route," an option that is not currently available to them – as he called for a "pause" in such aid from Washington.

"I mean, we all represent states. We all have governors regardless of party who would love to have free money," McConnell said in response to a question on what the federal government should do to help states in tricky financial situations. "And that’s why I said yesterday we’re going to push the pause button here, because I think this whole business of additional assistance for state and local governments need[s] to be thoroughly evaluated."

McConnell then mentioned that many states are struggling with funding pensions or similar programs, saying "[t]here's not going to be any desire on the Republican side to bail out state pensions by borrowing money from future generations."

After Hewett weighed in, criticizing liberal states that racked up significant liabilities, McConnell said he favored letting states declare bankruptcy, as local governments are allowed to.

"Yeah, I would certainly be in favor of allowing states to use the bankruptcy route. It saves some cities," McConnell said. "And there’s no good reason for it not to be available."

McConnell's comments come one day after the Senate advanced an interim stimulus package to restock funds in the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and address a handful of other priorities. He initially sought to have the bill include only funding for the PPP but Democrats held up the legislation until they could extract concessions from the majority leader. Though McConnell ceded to some of their requests, he kept funding for state governments out of the bill, which is expected to see a vote in the House of Representatives on Thursday.
