When I worked on K Street (a long time ago) in the "government relations dept" for one of the specialty medical associations, Big Pharma was the biggest and spendy-est lobbying group by far. They "owned" everyone.

The story about Dr. Mary Sherman is also featured in another documentary with Jim Marrs and the connection to the JFK assassination. Hair raising stuff.

To recap:
Quinine is made from the ground up bark of the cinchona tree. The brand name for synthetic quinine is Qualaquin. It can be taken to cure uncomplicated malaria but should not be taken in an effort to prevent malarial infection.
Chloroquine (brand name Aralen) was invented in 1934 as a safer version of quinine. It is used to treat malaria, amebiasis and other "off label" purposes.
Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) (Brand Name Plaquenil), was invented in WWII to be a cheaper, safer version of Chloroquinine with fewer side effects for troops serving in the Pacific theatre. It can be taken preventatively before entering a malaria prone area. It can be used "off label" to treat diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
