The strategy was in the location of the building.

Architecturally, it was adequate to do what needed to be done without risking alerting the British.

If there was an 'ideal' tower to send the signal to, Allies wouldn't have used it anyways because the British were literally breathing down our necks

Subtlety saves lives

And in some circumstances, countries.

Also, adding a railing or a door doesn't count as rebuilding.

It was rebuilt once after the storm in the early 1800s

Well, my points do actually describe the 'torch' situation

All they needed were 2 small lights to be visible over the river.

The [scouts] that were told to look out for the signal had [telescopes]

Not sure what point is being missed (by me or you).

The church itself was also a crypt, so the use of urns in any capacity had little to no place at the top of a catholic church, unless they weren't urns at all (decorative jars, etc)

Maybe if you looked at some tourist pics of the inside of the building including the crypt, which is somewhat open to the public you may get more of what you're looking for?

Also the torches that were actually used are out there still. Pics exist for sure. The jars/urns as well. I was looking earlier on google. it's there.
