While L.A. County reports total of 13,816 coronavirus cases, antibody study shows hundreds of thousands more could have had COVID-19 in the past

While Los Angeles County has reported a total of 13,816 coronavirus cases, early results from an antibody study conducted with the University of Southern California shows that hundreds of thousands more could have had COVID-19 in the past, officials announced Monday.

So far, 863 L.A. County residents have been tested between April 10 and 14 as part of the study.

The study estimates a prevalence of COVID-19 antibodies in the county to be 4.1%, with a range that could be as low as 2.8% and as high as 5.6%, when you factor in the reliability of the tests.

An estimated 221,000 adults to 442,000 adults at the high end may have been infected at some point before April 9 with COVID-19, suggesting that the number of total people in the county with a past or current infection is 28 to 55 times higher than the number of reported positive cases, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, L.A. County’s public health director said Monday.

“Although I report every day that we have thousands of thousands of people that have tested positive, the serology testing lets us know that we have hundreds of thousands of people that have already developed antibodies to the virus because at some point in time over the last couple of months, they have in fact been infected with COVID-19,” Ferrer said.

But having up to that many people who may have already had the illness means that the fatality rate from the virus is much lower than originally believed, Neeraj Sood, the USC scientist leading the study said Monday.

Residents should assume that they could be infected and that all of the other people they came in contact with can also be infected, and she again stressed the importance of staying home and observing physical distancing requirements, Ferrer said.

Although the sample size was relatively small, Ferrer shared some early estimates about who was most likely to be infected:

Men were more likely than women to be infected. The estimated prevalence is 6% among men and 2% among women

7% of African Americans, 6% of whites, 4.2% of Asians and 2.5% of people who were Latinx who were tested were found to be positive for COVID-19

2.4% of people who were between the ages of 18-34 were positive

5.6% were between 35 and 54

4.3% who were 55 and older tested positive

“Being positive for COVID-19 antibodies does not mean that a person is immune or that a person is not able to be reinfected. More research is really needed to understand what protection do people have who have already been infected with COVID-19,” Ferrer said.

The USC study will continue, and a representative sample of around 1,000 randomly pre-selected people will be tested every two weeks to track the trajectory of the virus in the county, officials said.

She also reported an additional 17 coronavirus-related deaths Monday, bringing the death toll to 617 countywide.

Stanford University released results of antibody testing in Santa Clara County last week, similarly estimating that between 2.5% and 4.2% of Santa Clara County residents had antibodies to the coronavirus in their blood by early April.

I've just read the history of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The lanterns were signals letting the militiamen know how the British (the Enemy) was coming - 1 lantern by land and 2 lanterns by sea.

Well, speaking for myself, this was immediately understood. I'm not sure about other anons, but this was part of my primary education. We had to know this stuff in order to go on to highschool. Granted, this was back in 2003…. I saw the doors slamming shut behind me as I went through school. History books were changing.

In response to the current shortfall, the Vatican has cut costs through various measures, including a freeze on hiring and promotions, a ban on most overtime work, the cancellation of conferences and the suspension of business travel, according to Vatican officials. Pay cuts or layoffs of the Vatican’s approximately 5,000 employees aren’t on the table, the officials said.

The Vatican regularly receives financial assistance from bishops in rich countries, particularly in the U.S., Germany and Italy, the three top sources of an annual gift from bishops that regularly yields more than €20 million. But church institutions and donors in those countries have also been hit by the current crisis. In Germany, the Catholic Church’s medical and social service operations make it one of the country’s largest employers, funded largely by a government-collected church tax that brought in more than €6.6 billion in 2018. Q, and anons. Just saw something super strange over Madison WI. A straight line of 38 lights in the sky heading SW then 1 more a few mins later. Then another wane of lights in a straight line, heading on the exact same course. It was like a train of lights in the sky, and it was witnessed by myself and 3 others. My phones camera couldn't pick them up for a photo. And oddly, even though we are practicly cloudless tonight, they all became visable in the same spot, and likewise dissapeared in the same spot further down their trajectory. Some of the lights were slightly staggered, but same course and speed as the others. No number on the 2nd wave. Lastly, to the 2nd wave had 2 lights side by side for the last two lights. Anybody else ever seen anything like this? The two other strangers passing by us that saw it were a lil freaked out. And no, we are not under the influence of anything. We were actually out for a bike ride, and the other 2 guys were cyclists that I stopped and pointed out the lights. Freaky stuff.

“Twitter can pursue a political agenda and ban outlets like Zero Hedge and War Room for speculating about COVID’s origin in a lab in Wuhan,” Rachel Bovard, senior adviser at the Internet Accountability Project, told the Daily Caller News Foundation before citing a Washington Post report noting that the State Department warned the virus might have come from a lab in Wuhan, China.

Meanwhile, the platform takes “zero action against actual government sponsored, communist propaganda, and suffers zero consequences for any of it,” Bovard added.

She mentioned Zero Hedge, an online outlet that Twitter banned for speculating that the virus leaked from a lab.

Look at a graph of ore smelting operations inside the U.S. - steel and aluminum are the two big industrial metals.

China was burning coal back in 2012 to produce aluminum from ore. The process is so insanely inefficient it is absurd (our own aluminum ore smelt was located near hydro-electric power for a reason) - and they were selling it for pennies to our dollar. It's insane (there again, aluminum that shatters like glass when dropped is one of those things you get what you pay for to some extent).
