We could just skip to the part where we make it OTC and circumvent the corrupt doctors. Call it a seasonal flu medication where you have to show your license to get it, like pseudoephedrine.

Well, there are tons of unregulated dietary supplements that are potentially worse for you. Then there's other OTC meds that can quite literally kill you if you are reckless in dosage as well. Think of it this way: In places like Canada or Guatemala, you can buy Tylenol with Codine OTC. In the US, codine only comes via prescription.
