Because the thesis is locked, I included two slides from OTHER authors, to give you an idea of the kind of universe Lori's widow was in with this image processing and coding: in essence, trying to find the most efficient ways to store pixel data and then read it back, both as quickly and, more importantly, as accurately as possible.

Seems like the kind of stuff you'd want to know if you were to, say, superimpose things into video and have the corresponding result look as convincing as possible (back in 1997 and onward.)

I mean, Lori's obituary revealed that Timothy was a "prominent" member of the USAF.

Lori's husband wrote his thesis on digital video compression. Maybe the planes really were CGI and he knew? Because he was the geek who helped put it together? Just a theory, throwing that out there.

If I remember right, most of the live shots didn't show much of a plane, with the exception of the one they tried to pull off live and messed up (the infamous nose-out shot, pic related)

My theory would involve the idea that most of the plane footage was introduced afterwards (the stuff taken by onlookers instead of the live TV footage)
