Closing beaches is the exact opposite of what the coronavirus science tells us to do
One little-discussed symptom of the coronavirus pandemic is stupidity. This is evident from the nonsensical decisions taken recently by state- and city-level officials to close down beaches and prohibit firework displays heading into the Independence Day weekend.
The mayor of Los Angeles said the purpose was to “prevent dangerous crowding that results in the spread of deadly COVID-19.”
And yet, keeping people inside is the exact opposite of what the science says we should be doing, as studies have suggested that sunlight deactivates the virus.
Dumb politicians: Good to know — now everybody get inside!
It would be funny if it weren’t making life so miserable.
It’s not as though people don’t find other ways to congregate. That’s what humans do. Every bar and restaurant in Washington, D.C., was closed for about three months, and that turned the massive roundabout near my home into something resembling an outdoor dance club.
These knee-jerk decisions by trigger-happy lawmakers will do absolutely nothing to stop the spread of the coronavirus. If anything, they’re helping it spread by keeping people shut inside.
