In Kubrick's adaptation, Jack drives a yellow Beetle, and later finds a crushed red VW Beetle on the side of the road.

There is no car wreck in the novel. Early in the film process, Kubrick rejected King's screenplay in favor of another.

This was no doubt a direct message from Kubrick to King.
