An Oregon politician admitted that he wrote himself a racist letter after claiming he received it from an anonymous person, according to Hermiston Police.
Jonathan Lopez, who was a Umatilla County commissioner candidate, claimed on social media that he received a letter in his mailbox. The letter was filled “with derogatory and racist terms,” KEPR-TV News previously reported.
A criminal investigation for second-degree intimidation was launched and closed after police deemed the incident to be fake, Chief Jason Edmiston said according to KEPR-TV News. Lopez admitted that he faked the letter verbally and in a written admission, according to police.
“The time spent on this fictitious claim means time lost on other matters, not to mention it needlessly adds to the incredible tension that exists in our nation today.” Edmiston said in a statement, KEPR-TV reported, “As a lifelong resident of this diverse community, I’m disgusted someone would try to carelessly advance their personal ambitions at the risk of others.”

The state of Washington is planning on reopening its schools for face-to-face instruction in the fall but will prioritize “students furthest from educational justice” if all students aren’t able to come back at once.
These students include “students with disabilities, students with 504 plans, English learners, students who are migratory, students experiencing homelessness, students who are in foster care, students of color, students experiencing poverty and students who were not equitably served through continuous remote learning in spring 2020.”
According to the guidelines, these students were impacted the most by the loss of in-person learning.
The guidelines also ask the districts to “attend to students who fit into one or more of these identified populations and then integrate supports.”
A Frequently Asked Questions document associated with the reopening guidelines said that “students furthest from educational justice and those who require in-person services to fulfill their basic education needs should be districts’ highest priority.”
The school districts do not expect to be able to accommodate all students due to new health and safety requirements.

Shirley quickly debunked:
Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Civil War general. The Library of Congress says he was a Democrat. He was the founder of the KKK. Democrat. The KKK was, for all intents and purposes, the shock troops, the terrorist arm of the Democratic Party in the post-Civil War area right up to the 1920s, right up to the 1950s, even into the ‘60s.
They were the ANTIFA of their era. The Democratic Party started the Civil War because the Republican, Abraham Lincoln, was elected in 1860. And 1861, Fort Sumter was fired on by Southern Democrats. The fort held by Union troops. And that was what kicked off the Civil War, it was the attack by Southern Democrats on northern troops in Fort Sumter, in Charleston Harbor in South Carolina.
In my July 1 fact check, I pointed out that 19th century writer Robert G. Ingersoll famously said this of the Democratic Party in 1876:
Every man that loved slavery better than liberty was a Democrat. The man that assassinated Abraham Lincoln was a Democrat. Every man that sympathized with the assassin – every man glad that the noblest President ever elected was assassinated, was a Democrat. Every man that wanted the privilege of whipping another man to make him work for him for nothing and pay him with lashes on his naked back, was a Democrat. Every man that raised bloodhounds to pursue human beings was a Democrat.
The next day, Facebook censored NewsBusters on its social media site, declaring it inaccurate to say Democrats started the war and founded the Klan. Facebook eventually backed down and removed the censoring tag.

Greenbelt, Maryland – A federal grand jury has indicted Eddie Ray Johnson, Jr., age 59, of Brandywine, Maryland, on federal charges of theft of government property and money laundering. The indictment was returned on July 6, 2020.
The indictment was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur; Brigadier General Terry Bullard of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI); Special Agent in Charge Robert E. Craig, Jr. of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS), Mid-Atlantic Field Office; and Special Agent in Charge Kelly R. Jackson of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), Washington, D.C. Field Office.
According to the indictment, from January 2003 to February 2018, Johnson was a civilian Air Force employee, most recently as a travel coordinator in the Secretary of the Air Force, Office of Legislative Liaison, where he planned congressional travel and reviewed and approved accounting packages submitted by trip escorts, among other duties. The indictment alleges that from March 2014 through September 2017, Johnson used his government-issued travel credit card to obtain more than $1.1 million in cash advances, at least $774,000 of which he diverted to his own personal use.
According to the indictment, Johnson frequently deposited the stolen funds into a non-interest bearing account opened in his name at a bank branch in the Pentagon. Employees in the Office of Legislative Liaison were instructed to open such accounts so that they could more easily deposit and withdraw government funds for official use without accruing interest. After depositing the stolen funds, Johnson allegedly wrote checks to himself, which he deposited into his personal bank accounts, as well as expended the money for his personal use.
If convicted, Johnson faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison for theft of government property and a maximum of 20 years in federal prison for money laundering. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. An initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt has not yet been scheduled.
