Umbrellas don't just protect a person from the rain. Look at some of the vids of the Chinese people. They are actually using umbrellas for self defense.
If you're not going to carry a gun, at least carry a nice pointy umbrella.
Some stadiums don't even allow people to bring in an umbrella because they are seen as possibly being used as a weapon.
