Bari Weiss, a writer and opinion editor for the New York Times, resigned from the paper of record Tuesday. She published her resignation letter, citing a “new consensus” at the Times “that truth isn’t a process of collective discovery, but an orthodoxy already known to an enlightened few whose job is to inform everyone else.”

My own forays into Wrongthink have made me the subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views. They have called me a Nazi and a racist; I have learned to brush off comments about how I’m “writing about the Jews again.” Several colleagues perceived to be friendly with me were badgered by coworkers. My work and my character are openly demeaned on company-wide Slack channels where masthead editors regularly weigh in. There, some coworkers insist I need to be rooted out if this company is to be a truly “inclusive” one, while others post ax emojis next to my name. Still other New York Times employees publicly smear me as a liar and a bigot on Twitter with no fear that harassing me will be met with appropriate action. They never are.

President Donald Trump will address actions the administration plans toward China during an event at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Washington, according to a person familiar with the plans who requested anonymity.

The planned announcement in the White House Rose Garden comes as the president faces a midnight deadline to sign legislation that would penalize banks doing business with Chinese officials involved in the national security law the country is seeking to impose on Hong Kong.

Trump is expected to sign the bill, the latest in a series of efforts designed to pressure China amid tensions over the spread of the coronavirus, implementation of a trade pact finalized earlier this year, and efforts to tighten control over Hong Kong.

The legislation would require the State Department to report to Congress every year about officials who seek to undermine the “one country, two systems” model that applies to the special administrative region. It also gives the president the power to seize the assets of and block entry to the U.S. for those individuals.

Under the legislation, banks are granted a kind of year-long grace period to stop doing business with entities and individuals the State Department determines to be “primary offenders” when it comes to undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy.

Portland's unrest continues for six straight weeks with no apparent end in sight

Portland has been more than $23 million in losses due to looting and rioting.

Demonstrators have been seen lighting mattresses on fire and setting off fireworks in the streets.

Just this weekend, a federal officer protecting a closed courthouse was struck in the head and shoulder with a hammer as protesters attempted to break down the court’s door. The courthouse suffered an estimated $50,000 in damages, according to KGW.

Jacob Michael Gaines, 23, of Texas, was arrested for the assault on the officer.

Amid the unrest, federal officers were called into the city to protect federal properties including the Mark. O Hatfield Federal Courthouse, Pioneer Courthouse, the Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building and Terry Schrunk Plaza.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security deployed more than a half-dozen law enforcement agencies and departments, with officers from the U.S. Marshalls, the Federal Protective Service and U.S. Customs and Border Protection rotating protection services throughout the city.

However, the violence has no apparent end in sight, and it remains unclear who is responsible for helping organize and supply protesters as they continue to wreak havoc in the streets – most recently focusing on federal property.

Local officials have criticized federal law enforcement and even President Trump for the havoc. Meanwhile, one group of anti-capitalist, anti-fascist teens who call themselves the Pacific Northwest Youth Liberation Front has used social media to organize throughout the city.

The Seattle Times reported the group uses social media to promote rallies, provide rioters with tactical advice and offer commentary on the gatherings that have led to clashes with police. Its goal is to upend the U.S. political system.

PNW Youth Liberation Front has apparently existed on social media since at least 2017. It was involved in an attempt last month to create the “Patrick Kimmons Autonomous Zone” in front of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler’s apartment in imitation of Seattle’s Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP), which was recently cleared out by police.

Early Monday, the group tweeted, “Portland is an autonomous zone, b–ch.”

Another tweet from the account says, “Your protest can NEVER be peaceful if it perpetuates the violence of policing.”

The “anti-fascist” collective has been active in the riots and protests following the death of George Floyd, tying its actions to those of Black Lives Matter. Its calls to action have included organizing the occupation of the Multnomah County Justice Center, which became a site of a mass protest until cleared out by police.
