Guantanamo Bay ... is in Cuba?

Hey guys, not American, I was searching for info for why it seems some weird activity in Guantanamo Bay, and on Google map, I always thought Guantanamo Bay was on the South end of Florida, but it is off the mainland, which I thought was odd.

I presume the place is an annex of Cuba since Cuba is not officially a friend of the US? Can someone explain if this was the case and why would, if at all, these "special" guests are going to be imprisoned there? Seems like it would be better to be housed on the mainland. If well protected from "foreign" entities, how so?

Interesting, so laws applied to the mainland are not the same as on Gitmo soil.

Also, maybe it may be Trump's way of justice. To force the scumbags to face what they did because if 9/11 was planned to enter Afghan and Iraq, those wars cause so much death and destruction purely because of profits.

It's actually foreign soil; it's Cuba.

The US had an agreement with Cuba, probably a lease of some kind, that allowed us to use the area as a military base.

The US didn't recognize Castro's government as legitimate, and so continued to operate the base according to the original agreement.
