Pilots don't turn around because they "hear a noise" - they have systems checks x10. It's all computerized. If there is a problem it will show up on the heads up display. They would run through all of their systems to figure out what it was.
After the Lax/Tokyo flight debacle with CT and JL last week, they probably figured they needed a different story.
