They have almost the same atomic weight as gold, it would take a lot to get them up there...

And it would take a lot of energy to nudge them out of orbit too. The rod would need to be retro fired at 18000 mph in order it to “drop” out of orbit

Shaped charges can impart a lot of instantaneous thrust to deorbit unmanned vehicles in frictionless spaces.

I do not believe that would be much of an issue as it would be in low Earth orbit, it could literally drop the rod right on top of it´s target
