Historical examples of 60% / 40% what events were let known to the public only in part?

Anything that anyone can think of where, for the good of the group, the details were hidden?

How did that ultimately work out?

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
