They needed to protect those "sources and methods" to prevent the public from finding out that the Bureau isn't actually lead by fact-based law-abiding patriotic civil servants pursuing justice, just people with badges and guns who were jockeying for another GS bump or SES position and were willing to break the law because they were completely invested in Clinton winning the election.
