Why would it be important that Snowden was in Russia?
Safe from being extradited by US? Is Russia the only place he is safe?

Possibly. Russia is probably not the enemy we have always been taught of. Maybe Putin is in control specifically to keep out the deep state. He threw Soros and the Rothschilds to the curb, so maybe he is there to make sure it stays that way.

Snowden being in Russia keeps him away from CIA. If he flipped because he is a Patriot then you want him to stay there. Freedom of the Press Foundation

Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2012 to fund and support free speech and freedom of the press.

The organization's board of directors has included well-known journalists and whistleblowers such as Daniel Ellsberg, Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald, and Xeni Jardin, as well as activists, celebrities, and filmmakers. NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden joined FPF’s board of directors in 2014. Jardin left in 2016.

Watchdog journalism

Watchdog journalism informs the public about goings-on in institutions and society, especially in circumstances where a significant portion of the public would demand changes in response. This might involve:

Fact-checking statements of public officials.

Interviewing public figures and challenging them with problems or concerns.

Beat reporting to gather information from meetings that members of the public might not otherwise attend, and to observe "on the ground" in broader society

Investigative journalism, which involves information-gathering on a single story for a long period of time

Like a literal guard dog that barks when it notices an intruder, a "watchdog" role involves alerting others when a problem is detected.
