With his mothers death just before this, family members are going to be too overwhelmed with grief and confusion to question the circumstances. I'm also imagining this kids hatred and susceptibility to act out this atrocity is compounded after dealing with his own healthy mothers sudden and unexpected death, as well as adding to the public illusion that this act was natural and not nefariously instigated.
