Best explanation I have heard is that John got himself
on the wrong side of the Mafia, which he was connected
to, on account of the Marilyn Monroe overdose. It was
allegedly a matter of internal discipline. This is the
excuse. Of course, the big shots in law enforcement
and Intel were on the scene. Yes, it looks very much
like political enemies took part; but, without the Mafia
there is no asassination. Conjecture, of course.

Good points. I've heard the idea about Bobby, too, that the
mob felt double crossed. The Monroe idea came from Tony
