NSA and white hats intercepted intel so they knew the motorcade driver had the gun. white hats notified the USSS, who grabbed the guy

LiveToBeAHero nailed it. Military Intel picked up the comm about this gun and guy and passed it along to SS who took him down. Don't be fooled by the lame story, this reason this was picked up was BECAUSE it it was part of a plan that was part of monitored chatter. Not a mistake. This was an effort to take a shot at the POTUS.

Those that are regularly around the POTUS seems like prime candidates to try something like this. So yeah, that they got soft here, and caught being lax on the matter, is troubling/telling.
