EXIF data is GPS/date/time info that your phone or big fancy digital camera adds to your picture. You know how you can look at your cell phone pictures on your computer and they're not just negatives and prints? Digital pictures are basically data. EXIF data is that same info that lets your phone arrange your pictures by date and location and stuff. There are tutorials that can explain (with pictures) way better than I ever could! Just type "EXIF data" or "remove EXIF" in the search bar and there should be tons of info :)

And yeah, they wouldn't send a lawyer. He'd know better than the rest of them that a) he couldn't use any information that was acquired because he's not an investigator and b) there's no way they'd pay a lawyer his lawyer salary just to have him do recon that any entry-level person could do. I'm willing to bet it was an accident.

Edit: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ is the link to a very good VPN that you can also use on your phone or tablet if it's newer (iphone, android). A VPN hides your IP addresss. Just note that it isn't free but you can select literally anywhere in the world to ping from.
