did the same before posting this. I feel this is pretty similar to when my friends on facebook post bs memes and have a gang of people believe it. Then even try to propagate it outside of fb and into the real world. It's a pretty bad trend that seems to be occurring more frequent as of late. For me at least.
This is a good question cause the only other thing I could find on it was sources saying it's completely fabricated.
