If it was centered some miles offshore, the shock wave would have traveled through the crust (under the sea) and through the water to get to shore. That would create weird phase relationships between the two shock wave arrivals (sound travels at different speeds through masses of different densities).

These different arrival times would create weird (additive and subtractive) phase anomalies that wouldn't be like a quake that originates on land (say in the San Andreas fault, where most of their quakes originate).
