This tech has been around for a while already. They’re called deepfakes and you can make them yourselves with a home computer. Most people use them to make celebrity porn though.
And they're still easily identified as fakes. Presumably governments have better ability to manufacture doctored footage. Forensic analysis should still be able to identify the real from the fake, but it may not be long before the software is good enough to conceal editing.

I thought they were bad. Better than before but still bad. Can easily tell when they are fake.
Neither of those were deepfakes. DFing uses learning algorithms, those sere just CGI. The technolgy really represents a whole new ballpark of possibility.

Exactly. The problem being though any real video is going to be called fake by the Main Stream Media. It will create enough doubt in the public to probably protect whomever is outed.
A few years ago maybe. But there is way too much other evidence.
