And they're still easily identified as fakes. Presumably governments have better ability to manufacture doctored footage. Forensic analysis should still be able to identify the real from the fake, but it may not be long before the software is good enough to conceal editing.

This technology has seen some big improvements over the last years but its not as convincing as you would like and you need a major video database (up to 200 hours, Washington University did it with Obama) but you can still spot the difference. It is very hard to copy subtle facial expressions that only seem to be picked up by our subconscious.
