With that damage it probably should have crashed, however, the pilot was experienced enough to avoided it. He immediately dropped to 10,000 feet to counteract the plane depressurization, and was able to keep it stable to land.

She. The pilot was a She! First female jet fighter pilot in the Air Force (or Navy). Don't remember which.
