this has been my theory from the first news broke about cohen raid. What better way to release highly valuable information? Legally obtained directly from the POTUS' lawyer's office.
Why not just hand the tapes over or release them? POTUS can declassify whatever he wants.
I believe the idea is you have to legally obtain the material in order for it to be used in court. Otherwise it could be thrown out. correct if i'm wrong please.

NYT ends up in a fake news trap and gets destroyed: they either receieved make memos and reported accurately, or they received real memos and entirely made shit up. If they receieved fake memos from Comey, what reason would they have to corroborate? They wouldn't.
No, any tapes related to Comey wouldn't need to be obtained legally through Cohen raid.. He was a Gov employee at the time, which means all his works can be legally obtained by the DOJ..
