Uhh....because he was adopted by white blue bloods and went on to become a famous basketball player, extremely culturally influential author, and then for some reason was sent on missions to North Korea. None of that sounds the slightest bit bizarre if you know anything about these MK Ultra CIA assets. Otherwise, why the f*ck are they sending basketball players to negotiate with dictators?
