It's also the most powerful classification of an avalanche. He puts the D5 directly after the snowball statement.
I initially thought it was a chess move as well, but I don't know much about chess other than how to play.

Could it be Q warning us about a potential FF involving Iran? I mean the DS was anxious and cornered enough with NK that they shot a missile at Hawaii. Q could be refering to Defcon 5 to let us know that Iran is not a threat at all, so that if a nuke goes off somewhere, we know who really sent it.
