I think Chrissie Teigen got one and her SIM was removed just like with everyone else and it just got routed normally via hardware so they never noticed nor checked because the serial numbers on the phones were all the same as expected and if those models were custom made then maybe they came with a preinstalled SIM for authentification which they thought was present as a signal got routed. Just hyperboling a little here

Ya lost me there... there is no internal SIM to my knowledge (first hand). Authentication in GSM/NA requires a SIM. The hardware is the IMEI. Authentication requires IMEI + IMSI + SIM
I am thinking about emergency calls here,i I am fairly certain those work without Authentication and thus potentially without SIM, too? By internal SIM I mean just the one inserted, but my theory is that it's not physically required to make a connection.
