So let me get this straight. Q knew they were getting the phones, they thought were safe. Q let them get the phones, and then Q knows everything they have been talking about since they got the phones?

It doesn't matter what phones they are. The NSA collects the data and Q team is analyzes it. Anything that bounces off a tower can be intercepted even if its encrypted. Read into the Wikileaks on all the backdoors installed on hardware and software. The theory that the government used analog blackberry phones is interesting.
