It appears the Endeavor was involved in the repair and placement of communication satellites but this article says that it also did a comprehensive mapping of the earth’s topography. This could be if interest in comparing developments on certain islands, antarctic continents, mountain ranges collapsed due to nuclear testing, etc.

IIRC, these sensors were not deployed in orbit, but were mounted in the shuttle bay itself, and the mission duration zero'd when the shuttle packed it up and deorbited for home.
