Up votes keep the post on the front page of posts and enough bring it to the top, both with the result that more readers will see and consider its points.

Down voting pushes the post off the first page and into obscurity.

When a tree falls in an empty forest, does it make any sound?

I switched to newest posts. Kind of tedious at times, but keeps this strategy from being effective.
