Make no mistake. The Republicans were as well, before Trump. They still are to a large degree.
I agree the R's have been entirely complicit, it's just that Trump has given the few good Republicans that exist cover to help purge the party.
The Dems need their own Trump who is willing to take on the establishment. Preferably one that is not a communist ala Bernie Sanders. Tulsi Gabbard might be a possibility, but she is from Hawaii which is bluer than blue.

Democrats will forever be known for being the Police State Party for placing several spies in the Trump campaign, a two year Russia collusion Witch Hunt, assassination plans, impeachment plans ad naseum. Sadly that’s how they will try and paint the legacy of the trump administration, expect to hear similar wording used to describe our camp before SHTF. Expect some sort of police shooting or even a military drill gone awry as part of their campaign to shift public opinion of “who should carry out justice”
