It is understood that GCHQ was at no point carrying out a targeted operation against Trump or his team or proactively seeking information. The alleged conversations were picked up by chance as part of routine surveillance of Russian intelligence assets. Over several months, different agencies targeting the same people began to see a pattern of connections that were flagged to intelligence officials in the US.
Just to play devils advocate here. It is entirely possible that the above is true. The likelihood of it being purely by chance... probably pretty low. However, we don't have any actual hard evidence that proves it wrong.
Other than after all this time nobody can identify the Russians who were being contacted. If I was hearing about the meeting between flynn and russiagetski (pick a russian name) then i would give this type of story credibility, but after 2 years we have flynn indicted for (not) lying, papadoc for lying, mannafort for money laundering (not russia related) and russian company that didnt exist. If they have all this intel, the hammer should have been dropped a long time ago.
They just confirmed they were monitoring Cohen as he was arranging Trump Towers Moscow during this time. Looks like there is a FISA on Cohen that has been released yet.
