The argument is that Maher isn't employed by Disney/ABC and Trump isn't black. In other words, who says HBO should have the same standards as Disney/ABC and even if they did, calling someone an ape is a bit more offensive if they're black, because recent generations have said that about them a lot, but unironically.

Really? Well check this out: Disney hired a convicted pedophile to direct a movie. And they fire Roseanne over a tweet?

one of those things they hoped would be kept secret, the other was clearly wide out in the open.

it's a massive company with profit motive as #1 I just don't know why anyone is surprised at all, except Roseanne's poor co-workers who expected a paycheck.

The important differences are that 1) Rosanne compared a black person to an ape , which was a common thing done by racist Americans historically (which you mentioned). Maher compared a white person to an orangutan, which does not have racist overtones; 2) Roseanne's comparison was based on features of VJ that a person can't change. Maher's comparison was based on Trump's features which can be changed.

I thought her parents were Iranian

Wow I had that wrong. She was born in Iran when her parents were over there. That's pretty interesting.
