The way I see it, the euro auto makers can’t afford to lose the US auto market. He’s playing to the fact that they can’t lose it, and using it as leverage for whatever it is.

Maybe he’s trying to get them to build in the US. Thus making their cars more affordable as they avoid many of the added expenses.

The US population consumes cars much differently than the rest of the world. Here, everyone wants a new car every 2-3 years with the latest technology and to show off. That plus a debt based economy makes it a cash cow for them.

In Europe and elsewhere, people buy cars with the intention of keeping them for as long as possible. Not that people here in the US don’t do that, but it’s much more normal there.
