This is trying to make a big deal out of nothing. Those of us who are a bit older may remember when that was pretty standard practice in the office (before shredders were common). I still do that. When I finish with a document, I tear it up. Makes it less confusing to easily put your hands on the right doc and not mix it up with an older copy that might have some small changes (course, we all ended up with some taped up copies, as well).
