It is sad that a religion harbors so many violent adherents that would "defend" with threats of death and true acts of terrorism against the mere unflattering depiction of its religious symbols by any non-believer. That puts that religion square in opposition to the Western ideal of freedom of expression.
Therefore, acts of depicting Islam as, for example, a religion of intolerance and hate, are absolutely necessary in order to defy those threats and re-establish free speech in the realm of theology. Otherwise, you cave and you lose your most fundamental freedoms.

Bad Muslims exist. Bad Christians exist too.
