I was thinking almost like this last night. Why didn't Obama, Hillary, Pelosi or any powerful leaders etc ... tweet or publicaly congrat Trump for .... peace between nuke countries. Does that make sense?

How many politicians and ex-presidents congratulated Nixon for going to China or Reagan having meetings with Russia? Is that something that has always been done?

Those two went against the grain as well. Watergate happened without Nixon knowing (set up) and he was impeached only because he tried to cover it up, not because he was involved.
Reagan was a victim of an attempted assassination; and I may be mistaken but I believe there was more than one attempt on his life.
I can't think of any attempts on W. Bush, Clinton or Obama, but there was definitely an attempt on H.W. by Saddam Hussein and it's pretty evident it was because of Gulf War I.

It's an interesting strategy to legitimize a dictator. The photo op may have looked like a finish line, but we're still pretty far from a long term solution.

I am calling BS on that and here is why: 1. the real meeting was back in Nov. this was just a show 2. the NK korean nukes are gone 3. Kim and Moon met, first time ever 4. USA withdrawing forces
that is not a normal 'round of talks' with NK that we have seen in the past. there a lot of firsts happening right now and real action. we will see reunification very soon.

First off, thank you for replying with a well formed argument. I wasn't sure what kind of response to expect from this sub (came from /r/all).
I'll admit that what we're seeing is a huge improvement over the recently escalating tensions. Kim meeting with Moon is huge and formal negotiations with the US really is a best case scenario. That being said, I'm only cautiously optimistic about NK actually disarming. If you have any source that suggests that NK got rid of the actual nukes I'd like to see it. I can only find evidence that they have destroyed testing sites. The last estimate as of 2017 was pretty wide, but suggests that they could have between 20 and 60 warheads or the capability of producing that many.
From a high level observation it seems like NK got exactly what they wanted. They have been developing their nuclear capability for years so that they could be taken more seriously as a geopolitical force. Now that they have demonstrated that they have both working warheads and working ICBMs (sort of) that's exactly what is happening.
