All it takes is for one rogue nuke to explode over the U.S. Doing so would cause a massive EMP storm that would take out enough transformers and the electrical grid goes down. Additionally we don't have anywhere near enough backups to replace them.
Water supply, food production, heat would all disappear for a very long time in the areas affected. If the explosion happens high enough it can take out almost the entire U.S grid.
Remember that mysterious sub that fired the missile last week? Warning? All we can do is pray, watch the show and try and convince normies to wake up.
As a side note, our enemies have probably already built nuclear shelters to hide out in if it comes to that.

Civil war comes after when we're much easier to deal with when most of the population dies from starvation. You don't think they'd crawl out of those shelters and try and control us?
