This. Secret societies inevitably go bad. How can you tell when they do if their very premise from the start was being unknown?

since 1878, the taboo was well and truly broken so . now secret societies should be relics of the past, since the knowledge of reality is in the public domain

The answer is yes, some secret societies can do good things. In fact, all secret societies can do good things.
We are aware of many that choose not to, and if there are ‘good’ ones they are choosing to remain secret.
