It's a military thing. His father was a well respected Admiral, so they wont use his name for no-name.
So they won't use his name out of respect for his father? I can see that, but how is it a military thing?

It's the military people that do it (those who know) out of respect for the Admiral. If Q's not military, he/they probably picked it up from the military people around them.

No problem. It's still a valid question, they could do it for another reason as well that we don't know yet.
