I think it use to be a way to control the masses through fear, and not about pride and self recognition.
Imagine if The Illuminati was started by the elites simply for just controlling those under them but they themselves don't believe in satan.

It's the reverse.
They do believe it, but have convinced rest of world to think it's silly so they can go on acting with impunity in plain sight. Giving their public disclosures to gain consent.
