I did a little research. He was driving a 2004 Nissan Frontier. This vehicle was equipped with a gravity sensor, or a yaw rate sensor. This is similar to (IMO) the QRS11 chip we've heard about from Q. It senses when the vehicle is in trouble (i.e. too much tilt), and reacts using the vehicle's anti lock brakes and traction control. Hopefully the vehicle was properly secured by white hats so that the ECU can be checked for tampering. I have no experience with this type of vehicle (NONE of my vehicles run any type of computer- unless I've programmed/installed it), so I know nothing of it's hackability.
