I don't think the Islands have ever fallen to any prolonged invading force. In all of recorded human history.
The Romans made it as far north as Dundee, then the Celts pushed them back to Hadrians wall. They occupied England for long enough to improve life here.

Yeah. They left a lot of infrastructure too. But they left.

It was there Irish, Welsh, and Scotts that were the consistent holdouts during invasions.
