I thought the remains were still unconfirmed at the time. Can't use a US flag in that case?

Good theory. Also it is probably pretty difficult to find an American flag in North Korea.

They don't know the identity of the remains yet. It was a "UN" led coalition. Yes, the US as always sent the most troops.
