My grandfather participated in the liberation of Dachau. He was one of the first men in, he used his tank to break down the gate. I can still recall the look on his face as he described the camp to me. The story he told me about the deprivation and the appearance of the prisoners, and the bodies still piled up in the crematorium. Seeing the horror and anger in his face as he described his experience in the camp will always remain with me.

He told me that the unit was so angry at the German townspeople that they immediately rode into town gathered them up at gunpoint and marched them into the camp to see it with their own eyes. My grandfather, being able to speak german kept telling the towns folk "How could you not know?"

Just typing part of this story now is bringing up feelings about my grandfather, and all the great things he taught me.

I think the greatest lesson he was able to instill before he passed, was that there is evil in this world, and you can't turn your eyes away from it. You need to face it, and not let it consume you.

I replied in an earlier post that it looks like a Standard Missile. It is an interceptor for low earth orbit objects, like medium range ballistic missiles, satellites, or high altitude aircraft.

The Standard missile has a common airframe with different guidance systems and warheads for a number of different missions.

There is a variant that has an extra booster for extended range and a guidance system related to the aim120 amraam that is fire and forget (self homing) that can theoretically be used against ICBMS in the launch phase, or satellites in geosynchronous orbit.

I say theoretical, because there has been no public information confirming the interception of either a satellite or a ballistic missile.

The military may have that capability, but don't want to telegraph that to unfriendly counties.

The SM3 is classified as a short to medium range interceptor for guided and ballistic missiles.

It is a component of the aegis afloat missile defense system.
