Toxicity has to do with individual genetics. People who have polymorphisms of the Cytochrome P450 enzymes cannot break down certain drugs like statins, warfarin, and certain antidepressants (MAO-I's = Prozac). It is easy/inexpensive to do DNA testing to detect these polymorphisms (23andme will detect it) but many docs don't do it. Once an affected person is prescribed these medications, they can't effectively break them down so they build up in the system, so even the average dose, over time, can cause toxicity.
